PERCUSSION workshop + admission to evening concert

Target audience

Musicians, including students to semi-professionals (all instruments) and people with a musical background of all ages.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of traditional MACEDONIAN composite rhythms

  • Develop basic improvisation techniques

  • Demonstrate knowledge of cultural perspectives as related to traditional percussion

  • Develop an analytical, creative, and intuitive understanding of music as a cultural language

Workshop attendees will also have the opportunity to hear these rhythms in action at the Festival’s next event in this venue, the launch of NY-based artist Niko Paterakis’ album Áyia Méthi : Echoes of Dionysus.

Ilias Papantoniou is an accomplished and versatile percussionist from Larissa, Greece.

A classical percussion and traditional dance student since childhood, his early studies in traditional Greek percussion led him to Istanbul, Turkey, where he studied darbouka with the internationally acclaimed master, Misirli Ahmet.

He later travelled to Spain, where he was accepted to study for a Master’s degree at Berklee Valencia (Berklee College of Music – Valencia, ES) and devoted himself to Latin percussion under the tutelage of the great performers Victor Mendoza and Yoel Paez.

Since then, he’s been traveling, teaching and performing as a member of the Percuaction Global Percussion Network around Europe and South America.
